If you want to engage in such a rugged sport of mountain bike climbing, by all means you have to be physically fit. A few weeks rough and tumble rides of going up and downhill fortifies your stamina. Then can you focus on elements 2 and 3, which are your climbing gear and your strategy. Taking these into consideration, that’s when you think of choosing the right mountain bike. After all, you would need help in mastering your gear use and climbing strategy.

First you have to know the difference between a road bike and a mountain bike. It’s vast.  The wrong choice of a bike virtually makes the climb impossible.

In determining a road bike or a mountain bike, note the framing and the tires. There are cheap road bikes you can buy and they have lighter frames than mountain bikes. After all, road bikes are designed for speed. By contrast, mountain bikes have heavier frames. They’re built to house suspension systems for withstanding rough terrain shocks which are indeed frame- jarring.

Road bike tires are thin and smoother, while those of mountain bikes’ are broad and made with a significant amount of traction. Road bikes are for speed, but mountain bikes are for handling rough terrains.

Indispensable to gear selection are climbing strategies you employ as a rider. The use of your gear and strategy depend on the type of hills you want to scale. There are mainly three categories which fall under these- the concave, convex and even- grade hill. Sub- categorizing these three, you must also note whether the hill is isolated, or if there are a series of hills or if it’s a mountain. Once you are knowledgeable of the terrain you have to mount, that’s when you become mindful of your strategies such as controlling and timing speed and your pedaling techniques.
